MCM
Print Design, Illustration
Architectural Digest states that the Mid-Century Modern (MCM) design style ranges from 1934-1965. A set of posters were developed to feature styles of chairs from this era. MCM was developed from aspects of Bauhaus design style as well as the poster’s layout and typography. The designer, chair name, and year of creation is indicated for each chair illustration.
PROCESS
-
I have always loved MCM design. There is a vast amount of chair types produced in this era, and they all offer some unique facet in design.
-
The range of years used was sourced from an Architectural Digest article. Each individual chair was researched for name, designer or company, and year first produced.
-
After researching to develop a list of MCM chairs, each chair was hand-drawn and arranged to fit like a puzzle in a mass group.
-
The process of typography for the two primary posters was developed to feature both the stretched and compressed letters. The vowels are the stretched letters in the heading for the posters, and the consonants remain compressed.
