NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND FOLK FESTIVAL
Print Design
This poster, inspired by 1960s music festival aesthetics, pays tribute to Elizabeth “Libba” Cotten, a key figure in the folk music revival. She originally learned to play guitar upside down, a detail subtly reflected in the composition. The radiating lines are a data visualization of sound waves generated from her iconic song, “Freight Train,” adding a dynamic, rhythmic element. The warm color palette, rough textures, and fluid arrangement aim to capture the energy and movement of Cotten’s music, transforming sound into a visual experience.

I enjoyed researching the process of translating sound as a visual form. Creating the sound wave generation and incorporating it into the poster was an interesting element to add and join with other elements.

Her life story as well as music are reflected in this work to help share her story and accomplishments.
